A strong industry is fundamental for a robust economy, which is the basis for creating a cohesive society that enables us to deal with current and future challenges and grasp opportunities that arise along the way.

But in addition to fast technological progress, we are witnessing a fast-changing political and economic context at the global level, with increased protectionism and the emergence of inward-looking national industrial policies. Europe must be ready to face the impact of these changes, and support its industry and closely related services. This should be done, not by becoming inward-looking, but by creating the conditions for industry to adapt quickly and anticipate future trends.

The European Parliament, but also the European Council and the Competitiveness Council, called on the European Commission to develop an integrated EU industrial policy, to be presented in the coming months.

The debate aims at discussing the need to develop a new dedicated and integrated industrial strategy at the EU level, as well as possible options forward. Is the current “mainstreaming of industrial competitiveness” delivering? How can Europe’s persistent competitiveness shortfall in the last years be addressed by such strategy?

With:

  • Patrizia Toia, Member of the European Parliament
  • Markus J. Beyrer, Director General of BusinessEurope
  • Paulina Dejmek-Hack, Member of Cabinet of President Juncker, European Commission

Deadline for registration has been extended to Friday 1 September 2017 (COB).
