TTIP stakeholder event

On March 12th 2014, Luisa Santos, Director for International Relations, participated in a TTIP stakeholder event organised by the European Commission in Brussels, giving a presentation on “Investment protection – what EU business is looking for in TTIP”. Mrs Santos discussed the merits of investment protection, referring in particular to investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). In an effort to clarify common misconceptions about ISDS, she explained how this mechanism works in practice and proposed concrete recommendations to improve the system, such as increasing transparency and adopting stricter rules to address problems of inconsistency. A balanced and modern ISDS is important to be included in TTIP as it would set high international standards and a strong political signal that all States, developed or developing, are equal.
