EU Commission’s Sustainable Product Initiative is an opportunity for more circularity
Today, the European Commission presented its Sustainable Product Initiative (SPI). It broadens the scope of the eco-design directive, introduces circularity criteria and proposes rules for sustainability labelling and disclosure of information in the form of a digital product passport.
BusinessEurope Director General Markus J. Beyrer said: “The Commission’s Sustainable Product Initiative package is a good step and an opportunity to further develop the European market for circular products and secondary raw materials. The eco-design regulation and the digital product passport have the potential to support circularity and information flow, but important conditions must be met such as cost-efficiency, confidentiality and proportionality. We will carefully assess today’s proposal and further engage with co-legislators.”
